Curing Soap – New Scents

The Soap Curing Process – New scents coming soon!

Did you know that cold process soap has to cure after it is made? This curing process simply is the time it takes for the soap to fully dry after it is taken out of the mold and cut into bars.

  • Soap is made of 3 key ingredients, Oils or fats, lye and water.
  • When the fatty acids in oils or fats and the lye (a base) mixed with water are combined they neutralize each other, the molecules combine and make a salt we call SOAP through a chemical reaction called saponification.
  • Technically, after the first 24 hours the lye is gone and the soap is safe to handle and use.
  • However, letting the soap cure (dry) for up to 6 weeks will allow any extra water to evaporate, which will create a harder bar that will last much longer when in use.
  • We choose to let our soaps cure the full 6 weeks before offering them for sale.
  • This ensures the best quality products we can offer.

I’m looking forward to our newest spring scents! Coming to the shop at the end of February are two new soap scents; Fresh Citrus and Lavender Lemongrass.

The Fresh Citrus is colored with yellow Brazilian clay and scented with Lemon, Orange and Lemongrass essential oils. It is the softest yellow reminiscent of spring sunshine.

The Lavender Lemongrass is colored with Alkanet Root powder and colloidal oatmeal powder, then scented with Lavender and Lemongrass essential oils. In half the soap batter I added alkanet root powder which created a deep purplish brown, then I swirled that into the other half with colloidal oatmeal powder which gives a little extra creaminess to the natural white of the soap batter.

These will be available in the Shop soon! We also have some spring craft shows lined up, so stay tuned for those dates. We will have these new scents along with all our other favorites.
